Assent means a child's affirmative agreement to participate in a clinical investigation. Mere failure to object should not, absent affirmative agreement, be construed as assent. The minor's assent must be accompanied by parental or guardian consent that the minor participate in a specified research. The assent is not legally binding, however, the accompanying consent is legally binding.
